Venezuela crosses its border with Colombia through its international conspiracy

The Venezuelan government announced this week that it was reopening its land border with Colombia, just three days after ordering its temporary barrier. According to Freddy Bernal, governor of Táchira state and alias of President Nicolás Maduro, the world’s decision responded by informing on an alleged “international conspiracy” coinciding with Maduro’s investiture ceremony for a third term, urged by much of the international community .

“The front, once again, is open. The State and the country in total peace and tranquility, in perfect civic, military and political fusion,” says Bernal in a video released through his Instagram account, recorded from a migration journey on the Colombian-Venezuelan front.

The lock, which began the viernes, took place in parallel with the ceremony in which Nicolás Maduro assumed a new six-year presidential term, amid accusations of illegitimacy from opposition sectors and foreign governments.

A short but polemical cierre

Bernal el viernes’ announcement, when the cierre was ordered, was accompanied by a message of security and control in the border region.

“We have absolute control on the front. We guarantee, under any circumstances, tranquility and peace of all the Tachyran people”, assured the governor in his initial declaration.

Despite these claims, the impact of the lock has been limited. Colombian Migration reported that during the days of restriction, normality was maintained at the main border crossings connecting to both countries.

A frontier of great importance

The border between Venezuela and Colombia extends for 2,219 kilometers, bordering six Colombian departments and four Venezuelan states. This broad geographic boundary amounts to approximately 12 million people, many of whom depend on daily interaction across border crossings for their economic, family and social activities.

The temporal barrier of the front, although short, has suppressed the fragility of bilateral relations and the strategic importance of this region. After the reopening, the situation at the transit points appears to have stabilized, although political tensions between the two countries persist.

With the border newly open, both Venezuelan citizens and Colombians return to their usual activities, while Maduro’s government continues to face international criticism for its mandatory challenges. The border region, key for millions of people, will become a vital connection point between both countries.
